Ransomware Gang Hijacks University Warning System To Create Threat

The Avos ransomware gang has hijacked Bluefield University's "RamAlert" emergency notification system, sending SMS messages and email alerts to students and staff, reporting that their data has been stolen and will soon be released.

Bluefield University, a small private university with 900 students, announced on April 30 that it had suffered a cyber attack, announcing that all exams had been postponed. However, on May 1, the Avos gang still had access to the university's RamAlert system, warning students and staff via email and SMS that their personal data had been stolen and that the data would be released if the university did not meet their ransom demands. The hijacking of the emergency notification system may have been done to increase the pressure from the ransomware gang against the university to mitigate the attack or claim that no data was stolen. The university released an update after the incident, stating that remediation and system restoration work continues, but there is no evidence of student data misuse.
