New Pest named CopperStealer Attempts to Hijack Social Media Accounts

CopperStealer is a malware with the same targets and methods as the Chinese SilentFade malware, first reported by Facebook in 2019. The researchers explained that the CopperStealer malware is from the same malware family as SilentFade, but has not been discovered before.

The malware tries to get hold of the passwords of Facebook, Instagram, Google and other social media accounts. Hacked accounts are used to serve malicious advertisements and further spread the malware. Researchers announced that they discovered a similar version of the malware for Apple, Amazon, Bing, Google, PayPal, Tumblr and Twitter, as well as Facebook and Instagram.

It is recommended that users use the two-step verification measure in their user accounts, change their passwords frequently, check their account activities for abnormal logins, not click on suspicious advertisements in their social media accounts, open unreliable files downloaded from the internet in a sandbox environment if possible, or check their accuracy.
