VTB Bank, One of Russia's Largest Banks, Was Attacked by DDoS

VTB Bank, Russia’s second largest financial institution, has announced that it is facing the largest DDoS attack in its history.

A hacktivist group claimed responsibility for the DDOS attack on the bank. In November, the hacktivist group announced the attack on its Telegram channel.

The attack blocks customers’ access to the bank’s website and mobile app, causing a major problem. The bank reported that as a result of the attack, its customers’ data was not compromised.

In a statement released by the bank, it said, “The bank’s technological infrastructure is under an unprecedented cyberattack from abroad, the biggest attack during the bank’s entire period of operation.”

According to the bank’s internal analysis and the local Russian media statement, this DDoS attack was determined to be a premeditated attack to disrupt the bank’s functions and annoy customers. Despite the inaccessibility of the bank’s online portals, all other core banking services are operating as usual.

VTB Bank confirmed that most of the attack traffic from abroad originates from Russian IP addresses and some of the traffic is from foreign segments of the Internet.
