Cyber threat actors have seized personal information of current or potential customers of Audi and Volkswagen.

Volkswagen is an automobile company that was established in Germany in 1937 for the production of a single model folk car. The brands owned by Volkswagen are Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Seat, Škoda, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle and Scania since February 2008.

Volkswagen Group of America said in a statement that an unauthorized third party obtained limited personal information about customers and interested buyers from a seller used by Audi-Volkswagen brands and some US and Canadian dealers for digital sales and marketing. It is known that this information is an electronic file that was collected for sales and marketing between 2014 and 2019 and left unsecured by the seller. 

Volkswagen Confirms Violation

VW said that sensitive data of 90,000 Audi customers and prospective buyers regarding their purchase or rental eligibility has been affected and will offer free credit protection services to these individuals. More than 95 percent of cases in sensitive data consist of driver's license numbers. Very few records are known to contain additional data such as birth dates, social security numbers and account numbers.

• Phone number.

• Rented or queried vehicle information 
• Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) 
• Vehicle model information 
• Vehicle year information 
• Vehicle color information.

• Buying, lending or renting 
• Driver's license numbers 
• Person birth dates 
• Person social security or social security numbers 
• Person account or credit numbers 
• Individual tax identification numbers.
